Experience Yoga

If you are seeking greater peace and calm in your body, mind and life, then you are in the right place. If you are seeking an authentic yoga experience taught by an authentic yoga teacher, then you are in the right place. If you are looking for deeper meaning, greater connection, and a healthier sense of Self, then you are indeed in the right place.

It is my sincere privilege to help you build a consistent yoga practice for self-care and balance in your daily life. For me, yoga has been a safe haven, a healing space and a guiding lighthouse. This brilliant, age-old practice helps us navigate security, strength and hope. It advances our human quest for meaning and embodies us with resilience, wisdom and wellbeing. Yoga grounds us in our bodies and in our environments to ensure that we proceed safely through potentially unknown or rough waters. Yoga becomes a beacon of light to guide us through the “fog” and “darkness” of life. It is this lighthouse effect that allows us to see ourselves and our situation more clearly, guiding us along the path of what it means to be human.

Come join us! Kate Brown Yoga promises a safe space, a hearty, full spectrum yoga experience, whether that be in a group or one-on-one. Together we will explore essential yoga, learn how to integrate poses, breathe, meditate, chant and reflect. You will discover how these practices support, develop, and infuse you with a sense of ease, strength, balance, and harmony. My classes and private lessons are creative, expressive, and fun, but most importantly, grounded in and informed by choice. Because choice is holy.

“Study thy Self, Discover the Divine”

Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra (II.44)

I’m Kate

Yoga Teacher / Social Worker / Yoga Therapist (in training)
Firstborn / Gemini / Jersey Girl

“I’m Irish. I do what I want.” — Bono

My most formative education has come to me through the practice of Yoga. I’ve practiced yoga since 2006, and taught since 2007. With nearly 1000 hours of training and 5000 hours of teaching, I teach Yoga as it was intended, a liberatory pedagogy balancing tradition with modern, centering breath, grounding the physical while offering snippets of ancient philosophy, cutting edge neuroscience, Trauma Informed intervention, Ayurvedic wisdom, and all things humanist and real.

I’ve taught for nearly 20 years in nearly every setting, but the belly of my teaching experience was gleaned in Higher Education, including University of Michigan, Princeton University, Smith College, University of California, Davis and Sacramento State University to name a few.

I’ve crafted a unique style that offers Yoga not reduced to something we do, but elevated as something we are, a qualitative praxis for human development. My approach allows students to connect deeply to the heart of their Being, then reconnect and relate to one’s own innate value.

I am Integral trained, having taken my first 200 hour with Ms. Kali Morse of Integral Yoga Institute in New York City. Soon after, I discovered the Yoga of Dharma Mitra, the Dharma Yoga Center and my personal fave (now closed), Brooklyn Yoga School. Here, I experienced deep healing and transformation with teacher, Lily Cushman. In 2021, I completed a 300 hour Advanced Teacher Training with SaraJoy Marsh. In 2023 my yoga credential advanced to ERYT-500 and I began doing Yoga Teacher Trainings and Workshops. In near future, I will complete an accredited 800-Hour Yoga Therapy program, but as of 2024, I am busy learning the ropes in affordable housing and advocacy work in Napa, CA. It is profoundly satisfying, important work and it my great honor to serve in this capacity.

My greatest spiritual, philosophical and educational influences include the one and only, Nature, Krishnamurti, Patanjali, Satchidananda, teachings of the Buddha, Jesus, Merleau-Ponty, Frankfurt School, Jane Goodall, Black / Queer / Feminist writers, Robin Hood and Bob Dylan.

Namaste,

"Kate brings her spunky personality and charming wit coupled with years of experience to class. I especially appreciate Kates focus on breath and her reminders that its “the belly of the practice”. Kate’s music always rocks and her humor keeps me on my toes and present."

"Kate teaches my kids yoga, once a week. Hiring her was my best move in a while. I am a single mom and both my boys have ADHD. Kate takes my boys out in the yard for a movement adventure offering so much more than "just yoga." She teaches them conflict resolution, sensitivity, and coping skills. Kate believes humor is one of the best ways to cope; instilling it in us. She says all the time, there’s a sense in nonsense. Hearing this has allowed me to lighten up and give my boys more space. OMG, and good enough parenting!" Every parent on earth deserves to know about good enough parenting."

"Kate Brown is what I would call a “ mensch “; integrity, kindness, curiosity, awareness are but a few adjectives that describe her as she offers herself as a teacher of yoga. I love her maturity with which she guides the class infused with self awareness and sharing of her culture and life observations. Her classes are both structured and offer as well freedom of expression making the experience fulfilling and wanting more. I look so forward to her classes."

I love Kate and her classes bc neither are canned. Practicing yoga with Kate feels like I’m having an actual experience; a little musical, movement adventure for the end of my day.

In the endless sea that is California’s yoga scene, Kate offers something slower and more mindful, a unique, contemplative, felt-sense experience paired with intention, choice and some of most beautiful music I’ve ever heard. Kate’s thoughtful and provocative classes bring me right back into my body, breathing away all my stress. In a culture that feels fake and almost entirely simulated, yoga with Kate feels authentic and humanizing and that is essential.

"As a new student of Yoga, I found my practice led by Kate to be very positive, motivating, and challenging. Kate takes the time to get to know her students and understand their strengths and limitations and tailors each practice around them. She offers a class that provides a good mix of balance, strength, stretching, breathing, and mental/spiritual focus. She takes time to explain the basis for different poses, and suggests modifications to suit different abilities. She also suggests things to work on independently at home. Kate always brings an energetic, yet calm and positive attitude to practice, which at 6:30 AM is how I’d like to start every day."

"Kate is a phenomenal yoga instructor. As I am not extremely experienced with yoga, she instantly created a sense of comfort and infuses the practice with both humor and inspiration. Kate loves to say that “yoga is a breathing practice” and this mantra stays with me throughout the day no matter what I need to confront. I have appreciated learning new ways to think about poses and different approaches to the practice!"

"I’m old and stiff, but feel young and flexible taking yoga one-on-one with Kate. My hips and back feel as good as they have in 20 years.. She’s helped me develop incredible core strength and taught me how to foam roll my entire body on my own. Since we’re both from Jersey, we enjoy talking about music and practicing our curse words together."

"A yoga class from Kate develops the body, soul, and mind. Kates experience allows her to present each movement and concept flawlessly with confidence all the while creating an environment where everyone is encouraged and all efforts are welcome. No right, no wrong just moving forward with intention. Kate leads gently while allowing for your own creativity. She invites you to find your best effort. She also offers philosophical insights that blend yogic ideas with contemporary concerns. I left her class in a much better state of mind and body. I will be going back often. "

"Kate is a great yoga instructor who makes the practice fun but also mindful. I always look forward to her classes knowing that every one is different and that I come out of it feeling challenged, grounded and much better about myself. What I appreciate is that Kates personality shines and she keeps the dharma talks light, encourages us to work at our edge and interpret poses in our own creative ways. Lot of agency and choice in Kates classes, which feels unique and liberating. "

"You may arrive at one of Kate’s yoga classes as a stranger but you’ll leave as a friend. She has a welcoming, whimsical way about her that’s infectious. Her classes are inventive, dynamic and fun. Kate guides us but encourages us to make our own interpretations. Give her classes a try. Your mind and body will thank you. "

"Kate Brown has been teaching me gentle yoga with meditation on zoom from Paris (where I live now) since early Covid. We met in person while she was teaching for University of Michigan’s campus wellness program. It was my last year as professor at UofM when I found Kate and her delightful yoga classes. I adore her deep voice and lighthearted manner. She makes me laugh from the gut and always gives me interesting things to contemplate. Kate is always creative, eclectic and energized. I get my best work done after our meditations and truly feel like we have a deep, unique connection. This is Kate. She makes everyone feel special, safe, and seen. A truly therapeutic experience. "

"I knew from the moment I saw Kate she was a genuine soul. When I met her, I had been a member (at local studio) for a year. I had tried yoga classes several times before Kate started teaching at my studio. I avoided yoga bc I get migraine headaches. Going up and down only incites and amplifies them.

I decided to give yoga another try after hearing the feedback around the studio about Kates incredible classes. I started taking her class and it completely changed my mind about yoga. It really changed my body and more importantly it did not aggravate my migraine headaches.

Kate gives clear instructions and lets you know it’s okay if you can’t do some of the poses. It does not matter what level you are at, she reminds you to do what’s best for your body. Do what you can, she encourages.

She is an amazing teacher and beautiful human being. I will always be grateful that Kate came to our lil Davis studio. I love her confident east coast demeanor and her bad ass (believable) delivery. Yoga and CA need more like her!"
